JAYNE PAPALIA

Australian Ceramic Artist

Jayne Papalia is an Australian ceramic artist and designer working between functional form and sculptural expression. Based on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, her practice is informed by the coastal landscape — its erosion, rhythm, and quiet strength — and a deep respect for material honesty and process.

Her work explores the relationship between clay, light, and space, often blurring the line between object and architecture. Texture, shadow, and imperfection are treated as active elements, shaping how each piece is experienced within a space.

Alongside her authored works, Jayne is the founder of The Sunshine Collective, a coastal ceramics studio producing functional tableware and repeatable, design-led pieces. While the studio focuses on everyday objects, her personal practice remains slower and more intuitive, with each sculptural work approached as a singular exploration rather than a product.

All work is created by hand in her Northern Beaches studio, embracing restraint, material integrity, and the quiet luxury of considered design.

SELECTED WORKS & PRACTICE

Jayne’s practice is expressed across four primary bodies of work:

  • Sculptural lighting

  • Sculptural ceramic works

  • Architectural fixtures & hardware

  • Commissions

Each body of work is developed in response to form, scale, and material, with an emphasis on objects that hold presence and permanence within a space.

SCULPTURAL LIGHTING

Architectural lighting pieces designed as functional objects with sculptural presence. Each piece is made by hand in limited quantities or developed as a bespoke commission.

SCULPTURAL WORKS

Standalone ceramic forms exploring surface, proportion, and balance. These works exist independently of function, often blurring the boundary between design object and sculpture.
