JAYNE PAPALIA

Jayne Papalia is a ceramic artist based on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, known for sculptural works that explore form, texture and movement through clay.

Drawing inspiration from the Australian coastline, Papalia is particularly interested in the traces left by time and the elements — eroded rock formations, weathered surfaces, shifting shorelines and forms shaped by water and movement. Rather than recreating the landscape, she uses these observations as a starting point, allowing them to evolve into abstract sculptural forms through an intuitive process of making.

Working predominantly by hand, Papalia builds each piece slowly, allowing the natural behaviour of clay to influence its direction. Surfaces remain tactile and deliberately imperfect, preserving evidence of the making process alongside the variations that emerge through drying, glazing and firing. Works often develop over weeks or months, with this element of unpredictability becoming an important part of her practice.

Her work spans freestanding sculpture, ceramic wall works, sculptural lighting and objects for interior spaces. Across these forms, Papalia explores repetition, balance and movement, creating pieces that appear to fold, gather, erode or grow. There is a tension between strength and softness throughout her work — solid material shaped into forms that suggest movement and change.

Papalia works from her studio on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, where she founded The Sunshine Collective. What began as an exploration of functional ceramics has developed into a broader artistic practice, increasingly focused on one-of-a-kind sculptural works and the possibilities of clay beyond function.
