Where ideas take form

The Studio

From Coast to Clay

The work often begins beyond the studio - along the coastline, in the shapes, textures and details found by the sea. Back in the studio, those influences are interpreted through clay, evolving into functional ceramics and sculptural works, each shaped and finished by hand on Sydney's Northern Beaches.

Made Slowly, By Hand

Every piece moves through a considered process of forming, refining, drying, firing and glazing. Depending on the work, that process can unfold over weeks or even months, with time between each stage allowing the clay to dictate the pace. It's a process that can't be rushed, one where the marks of the hand and natural variations in clay become part of the finished piece.

Behind the finished piece

Benches are rarely clear, shelves are filled with pieces at every stage of the process. There are glaze tests, experiments, half-formed ideas and always something new underway. Not everything works the first time, pieces crack, glazes behave unexpectedly and ideas change along the way. It's all part of working with clay, and often where the most interesting pieces begin.

The Sunshine Collective began with a belief that the objects we interact with every day can be both functional and beautiful.
